Blackcart gives merchants the flexibility to customize their Try Before You Buy (TBYB) program configurations based on their program goals and desired shopping behaviour. This article covers how to set your program policy configurations and more information on how each configuration works and best practices.
How to set your program policy configurations
After installing the Blackcart App to your Shopify store, you will automatically enter into the first page of the onboarding wizard, "Program Configurations". Here you will be able to set the following policy configurations for your TBYB program:
- Program Name
- Deposit
- Try Period Length
- Number of items

After you've completed the onboarding wizard, you can still modify your program policy configurations at any time. To do this, go to "Store Settings" under the Blackcart app in your Shopify Store Admin > edit the configuration setting > click "Save".

How Program policy configurations work and best practices
Program Name:
- How it works: The program name will be displayed on the TBYB widget added to your PDP (see screenshots of TBYB widget options below). The program name will also be displayed as an item label in the cart for any items added to cart using the TBYB option.
TBYB widget options - Recommended setting: "Try Before You Buy" is the most common name for the program and is well understood by customers. We've also seen merchants call their program "Try at Home". Whatever you choose to name your program, be sure to keep it consistent across all marketing material (emails, ads, website promotion, etc). We also recommend avoiding program names such as "Try Now, Pay Later" since customers might mistaken the offering as a buy now pay later payment plan option.
Deposit:
- How it works: The deposit is set as a percentage of the price charged for each Try Before You Buy item in the order. The deposit is charged to the customer during the initial checkout process and is applied as a credit towards any items that are kept during the try period. Any remaining balance from the deposit after kept items are charged will be refunded to the customer at the end of the try period.
- Recommended setting: We strongly recommend charging a deposit for your program, between 5-10%. Checkout conversion is 34% higher with a deposit. Charging a deposit can also help manage shopper intent.
Try Period Length:
- How it works: The try period is the number of days your customer has to try the TBYB items in their order before payment is captured for the remaining balance. The try period starts once all items in the order are marked as Delivered in Shopify. Blackcart sends an email to notify customers that their try period has started. Once the try period expires, the customer will be charged for any TBYB items kept. They will not be charged for any TBYB items returned prior to the end of the try period.
- Recommended setting: The recommended length of the try period varies by retail category. For most merchants including apparel and eyewear we recommend 7 days. For mattress brands we recommend a longer try period of up to 30 days. For Beauty brands we recommend between 7 and 15 days.
Number of Items:
- How it works: The number of items is the max quantity of products a customer can add to their cart and checkout with as Try Before You Buy per order.
- Recommended setting: The recommended max quantity depends on your business and goals for the program.
